The Municipality of Ierapetra is the largest in southern Crete and the southernmost of Greece. Its permanent population numbers more than 26,000 people, while its largest settlements are Gra Lygia, New Anatoli and Koutsouras. It is located 100km southeast of Heraklion, 242km from Chania, 36km south of Agios Nikolaos, and Chryssi Island (Gaidouronisi) is 8 miles from the coast of the city.
Ierapetra has been inhabited for more than three thousand years, and the ancient city of Ierapytna, a city of theaters and statues, has reached its peak in the 2nd century BC, where according to records, its population reached 100.000 inhabitants.
The climate varies according to the location and is generally characterized as temperate Mediterranean with the specificity of short springs and prolonged autumns. Chryssi, also called Gaidouronisi, is an islet of the Libyan Sea, and is about 15 km (9 miles) south of Ierapetra and the island of Mikronissi is 700 meters east of Ierapetra. It is one of the many islands that surround Crete. It has an area of 4,743 sq. Km. and 2 residents.
Chryssi is surrounded by many beaches with golden sand, due to which owes its name. During summer season, there are many visitors who reach the island with tourist boats from Ierapetra. It is an island of exceptional natural beauty and there lies the largest naturally formed cedar forest in Europe (Lebanese cedar)..
Most cedars are 200 years old and reach a height of 7 meters. The density of vegetation is about 28 trees per hectare
